Chapter 13

Theology & Devotion

“And so the gods, excepting Cha, scattered the Pr-Gn across a new world created from the refuse of the original four, looking ahead to the day when their people could learn from their exile what it means to work and live in true community and to rely on something greater than themselves as individuals.”

Theana stifled a yawn, glancing sideward at Shul to see if he had noticed. He was looking right at her, a broad smile on his face.

“Leave me alone,” she whispered, laughing quietly. “I appreciate you coming to these things with me, but allow me my boredom! At least I come.”

Shul chuckled. “You only come to the minimum number of sessions required for Community Membership,” he pointed out. “If you did not, you would not be at the Center at all.”

“Details, details,” Theana sighed, smiling. Shul was correct, of course. She had tried to come to extra Pr-A educational sessions, but had found herself unable to glean much from the teachings. It was interesting, to an extent, but many of the Priests were rather dry and the material often repeated itself. So she had slacked off until she was struggling to even make it to the minimum number of sessions. If not for Shul, she might not attend at all, despite the consequences. In light of certain recent events, and the maelstrom that was her emotional state in those days, leaving the Center did not sound as tragic as it might once have.

“Are there any questions?” The teaching Priest, a lean man past middle-age with graying, receding hair and a too-fleshy face, stood at the head of the small, semi-circular classroom in front of a wall of dark slate. Using a white, chalky stick, he had sketched out a rough timeline of the Lorcronan version of the history predating the current world. The students, about fifteen of them, were seated on benches at curved tables. Some actually took notes, but most of these were the Members wishing to ultimately become Priests.

The Priest, ready to move on considering that no one ever asked questions, looked pleasantly surprised when someone near the front spoke up. Theana stifled a groan, having hoped that the session was nearing its conclusion.

“I have a question.” The speaker was a rather thin, middle-aged man with reddish hair that looked like a bowl upturned atop his head. He sported a pointed goatee and equally pointed mustaches that made him appear roguish despite his nondescript clothing. He was one of the few who had been taking notes. “You said that Cha came into being later than the other god-concepts, arising as a result of the nature of man’s base drives, emotions, and desires. As such a natural expression of man’s nature, how could Lor and the other original gods justify refuting Cha’s ways, labeling Cha as wrong or somehow invalid?”

If the teaching Priest had appeared pleased by the fact of someone asking a question, he looked positively aghast at the nature of the question, despite the humble tone in which it had been posed.
